ORCHESTRA

Connecting European Cohorts to Increase Common and Effective Response to SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic
Starting date:
01/10/2020
End date:
30/11/2024

ORCHESTRA is a three-year international research project aimed at tackling the coronavirus pandemic, led by the University of Verona and involving 26 partners (extending to a wider network of 37 partners) from 15 countries: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Congo, France, Gabon, Germany, India, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Venezuela.
The project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the ERAvsCORONA Action Plan which was developed jointly by Commission services and national authorities.

Framework Programme:

H2020-SC1-PHE-CORONAVIRUS-2020-2-RTD

The vision of ORCHESTRA is to efficiently generate rigorous evidence to improve the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 and to rapidly provide a structured platform to test the vaccine as soon as available.
It is facilitated by a pan-European population-based cohort linked with international stakeholders and non– European population-based cohorts constituting a unique database of aggregated data from hundred thousand individuals. ORCHESTRA, through the coordination of national or regional research efforts, will provide the basis for performing large scale analyses of available data and for prospective data collection in a homogeneous and coordinated manner. This will allow, with no further delay, to improve preparedness in the future if confronted with similar events.

OBJECTIVES

  • to develop evidence-based recommendations for effective prevention, protection and optimized treatment of COVID-19 patients (including long-term consequences) with a special focus on ‘at risk’ population, including healthcare workers and fragile individuals
  • to assess impact of environmental factors, socio-economic determinants, lifestyle and confinement measures on the spread of COVID-19
  • to provide knowledge on the efficacy of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2
  • to provide a model for responsiveness for future pandemic outbreaks.
Partners:

The project, led by University of Verona (Italy), brings together key European academic experts and research institutions in infectious diseases, data management and High Performance Computing (HPC) from 26 organizations (extending to a wider network of 37 partners) from 15 countries: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Congo, France, Gabon, Germany, India, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Venezuela.
